I am 26 yrs old. Coming home after completing three years in prison wasn’t an easy transition for me. I never thought for a second that I would become a statistic. I felt like my dreams of being successful were over. After getting convicted, doing my time and coming home my whole life drastically changed.
Since I have been home it has been hard to accept the harsh realities of being a convicted felon. In the darkness of my sorrows there… I see light! Although my confidence didn’t match my drive I still didn’t give in! From job interview to job interview, standing on a mountain of no’s I still refused to lose. In some of my deepest darkest moments, I made sure that I made time to pray. Some nights I prayed to tears because for me this new life of mine was just that hard — so I thought. Through the half-way I stayed in after I was released I was introduced to a list of organizations whose sole purpose was to help me. I came across MenzFit. MenzFit has been invaluable to me because it helped me to rise up, believe in myself, and provided me with the proper dress attire to go on job interviews. Now I have a stable job and I am in school. I attended MenzFit’s workshops which helped me gain the confidence I need to better myself in my future. Some say that the power to achieve lies in how much you believe in yourself!
IL DonersonCurrent Employment: American Federation of Government Employees
I was laid off from Congressional Quarterly in March 2009. I went to the Department of Employment Services’ one-stop employment office where they assigned me a case worker. For the next 30 days I was looking for work, and in my final meeting with my case worker I was referred to MenzFit to get the proper attire for my upcoming job interviews.
I had no idea it would turn out to be a great “fit”. When I got to MenzFit, I was treated with dignity and respect and was overwhelmed by the level of customer service that I received. The folks at MenzFit were very nice and gave me two suits for my upcoming interviews. When I left I felt a sense of pride and confidence that I was going to land one of the jobs that I would interview for. These suits were good luck for me, as I landed a temp to perm job as an A/P Accountant for American Federal of Government Employees.
Meeting MenzFit Director, Rhonda Willingham has really changed my life for the better. Ms. Willingham gave me hope in these hard economic times. Thanks Menzfit for all your support!
Tariq StillsMy name is Tariq Stills. I am a proud graduate of Lincoln University where I have earned a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Pre-Law. I am currently employed as a Therapeutic Staff Specialist in which I help children with behavioral problems transition through their day to day activities. I strive to be a role model for them and my two little brothers, someone that they can look up to and use as a prototype of success and dedication. As an entrepreneur I have worked with Project Great Potential, Blue Print for a Safer Philadelphia, and am currently partnering with Christopher Sample to curb the adolescent and adult violence in Philadelphia by opening doors and granting opportunities for those who are looking to gear their lives toward change and a bright future.
Being a participant of The Project Great Potential program has put me in direct connection with the MenzFit. MenzFit has provided me with an excellent choice of business attire to ensure that I look my best and have the utmost confidence, when presenting my business to investors. I must say that my relationship with MenzFit and Miss. Willingham is a relationship that is very beneficial and commendable. Thank You, MenzFit for all your help!
Steve KellyI am currently employed with Public Outreach Fundraising, as a street supervisor.
Having left the United States Army in 2005 after 14 years of service, I secured employment as a truck driver and heavy construction equipment operator. Shortly thereafter, I began to operate a home internet sales business, which became solvent and allowed my to quit my regular employment and devote myself to internet sales full-time.
However, as the recession took hold, sales fell off and I had to live off of my savings. I became clinically depressed and began to self medicate, using illegal narcotics and eventually became a full blown drug addict. My addiction led me to a life of crime and eventually into jail. I lost my home, car, and all my worldly possessions, and after completing rehabilitation for substance abuse. I came to live in the Philadelphia shelter system, with my wife and young son. I struggled with addiction for another year before finally surrendering the fight and becoming a dedicated member of a twelve step fellowship. I had to find work in order to move forward, and due to my situation, I had nothing presentable to wear to an interview. I began my job search, with the help of the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center (The Perimeter), and when I scheduled my first interview they referred me to MenzFit for interview clothes.
I must say that my experience at MenzFit was awesome from the start. The two volunteers that helped me, were absolutely wonderful. They were, extremely attentive and went out of their way to make sure that I found an interview outfit that was well fit, stylish, and complete from head to toe. I left dressed for success. I did get that first job, which helped me springboard into a bigger and better position.
I would like to thank MenzFit for the service you provide. You have been an invaluable resource in helping me rise up from what seemed to be a hopeless situation. I am once again a valuable, productive member of society. My family and I currently rent a nice home in Philadelphia, and I have a promising career doing a job I love and helping others along the way.
